Sweetest Day not created by greeting card companies, but Cleveland candy make

It might be a greeting card holiday and one that’s only recognized in the Midwest, but the third Saturday of October is Sweetest Day.

While often considered a romantic holiday, like a second Valentine’s Day, Sweetest Day was started as a way to remember those who feel forgotten.

In 1922, an employee at a Cleveland candy store, Birch Kingston, decided to share some sweets with orphans and elderly confined to their homes, Hallmark said. After that, other Cleveland candy makers followed suit, handing out thousands of boxes of candy to area charities. American Greetings said they called it “The Sweet Day of the Year.”

According to Hallmark, movie stars started in the celebrations during the 1930s, by passing out treats to paper boys, hospital patients and theater-goers in Cleveland.

The search engine's tribute to Melville's best known work coincides with the 161st anniversary of the novel's first publication in Britain in 1851. The doodle depicts a scene from the book in which Captain Ahab commandeers a boat to strike at the huge white whale.

The tribute also coincides with an ambitious project to record all 135 chapters of the novel over 135 days, with readings by famous fans including David Cameron, Tilda Swinton, Stephen Fry and Simon Callow broadcast daily online.

Melville's masterpiece is narrated by the sailor Ishmael, telling of his voyage on the whaling ship the Pequod, under Captain Ahab. Ishmael soon discovers that Ahab has one purpose on his voyage, to seek revenge on the ferocious sperm whale, Moby-Dick, who bit off his leg.

Christian Ponder confirms he’s dating ESPN’s Samantha Steele

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder confirmed on Friday that he is indeed dating ESPN sideline reporter Samantha Steele, whom he had met on the set of "College GameDay" several months ago, Tom Pelissero of 1500ESPN.com reports.

"There's been a thousand articles today about it," Ponder said on Friday. "You can't really worry about it. You've got to try to keep it private, but that's just part of the industry, part of the job. I don't know. Comes with the territory."

Ribbing from teammates also comes with the territory. According to Pelisserio, tight end Kyle Rudolph and other teammates have taken to referring to Ponder as "Christian Steele," but that hasn't phased Ponder, the No. 12 overall pick of the 2011 NFL draft.

"I'm proud of the relationship," Ponder said, smiling. "I can brag. I've got bragging rights, I believe."

Ponder initially revealed the existence of a relationship when he sent and quickly deleted a tweet to Steele, who was with him at the time. Ponder also sent a tweet to Steele on Oct. 9, claiming to have spotted her in a local Target.

The Voice coach - who is known for her risque fashion choices -admitted she loves going commando because she finds it liberating.

She told chat show host Chelsea Handler: "I don't like to wear underwear. I like to be as free as possible at all times. It's just who I am."

Christina, 31, recently revealed she is embracing the aging process and has no fear of getting older.

The mum-of-one said: "Some people are afraid of change and [feel] that getting older is a bad thing, but I really love maturing and gaining wisdom.

"And the experience of being pregnant and having a child and seeing what a woman's body can do is amazing."

Christina also claimed she has no problem ignoring her critics because she is very comfortable in her own skin.

She said: "I've always been one to make it very clear, love me or hate me, take it or leave it, this is who I am.

"I embrace my body, and I embrace everything about myself. Coming full circle is a celebration of freedom and happiness because that's what [my new album] 'Lotus' is representing. I'm embracing everything that I've grown to be and learned to be."
